School-age children and their families filled TD Garden on Aug. 12 for the 15th annual Back-to-School Celebration. The event – hosted by TD Garden in the Community, the Salvation Army and the City of Boston – provided 3,500 backpacks and winter coats to school-age students. Attendees also had access to vision screenings and an on-site dentist to help ensure students are prepared and healthy for the upcoming school year.
Students, parents and community members enjoyed a variety of activities on the arena floor and had the opportunity to “shop” for school supplies to fill their backpacks.

Joining the celebration were Charlie Jacobs, CEO of Delaware North and the Boston Bruins; Glen Thornborough, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Boston Bruins and president of TD Garden; Bob Sweeney, president of the Boston Bruins Foundation; Tanner Jeannot and Alex Steeves, Bruins forwards; Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts Kim Driscoll; and Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox.
“This is one of my favorite events of the year because it provides an opportunity to help students and families start the school year with the resources they need,” Jacobs said. “It also is a wonderful way to welcome our neighbors to TD Garden and showcase the venue as a resource for our community.”
During the event, TD Garden presented a $15,000 donation to the Boston Public Schools’ Visual and Performing Arts Department, which will help fund the newly formed Boston Public Schools All-Star Marching Band with uniforms, more instruments and offset participation fees for students.
Over the past 15 years, TD Garden in the Community has donated more than 56,000 backpacks and more than $600,000 to support students and families throughout Greater Boston.
