History in the making: Artemis II launches on mission to the moon

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida was front and center as visitors from across the globe gathered to watch the highly anticipated launch of Artemis II on April 1. The historic event is NASA’s first crewed moon mission in over 50 years and paves the way for future deep space exploration.

Delaware North’s team at the visitor complex, which the company has operated on behalf of NASA for over 30 years, played an important role in the event and provided an unforgettable guest experience.

Viewing packages offer exclusive experience

The visitor complex offered two viewing experiences for thousands of guests, both of which sold out well ahead of the anticipated launch date.

Guests at the visitor complex who purchased special launch packages could view the Artemis II launch from several viewing areas, including the Atlantis North Lawn, pictured above.

The “Feel the Heat” package offered guests access to the visitor complex on launch day and a chance to watch the launch from the Apollo/Saturn V Center, located 3.5 miles from the launch pad. The package also included real-time launch commentary from a space expert, buffet meal, premium souvenir and commemorative launch card, badge and lanyard.

The main visitor complex viewing package offered guests access to the visitor complex and one of three viewing areas – the Atlantis North Lawn, Rocket Garden or Parking Lot 3 – and included launch commentary from a space expert and a commemorative launch card.

Delaware North’s nearby Courtyard by Marriott Titusville Kennedy Space Center was sold out for the launch. The Space Bar, its rooftop restaurant, hosted NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman for an interview on the eve of the launch with “The Endless Void,” a YouTube channel hosted by Emmy Award–winning space journalist Kristin Fisher.

Isaacman called it “one of the best viewing spots you could ask for.” Fisher, daughter of veteran astronauts William and Anna Fisher, also broadcasted from The Space Bar for the launch, hosting a “Launch Party” that included an interview with Wayne Soard, the hotel’s general manager.

Limited-time Artemis exhibit enhances experience

A never-before-seen Artemis exhibit debuted in the days leading up to the launch in the Space Shuttle Atlantis attraction. Highlights from the exhibit included:

  • Awe-inspiring NASA displays featuring authentic Artemis hardware and mission elements
  • An Artemis II crew showcase with personal items and inspirational stories
  • Stunning large-scale models, including a 14-foot-diameter Moon replica
  • A sneak peek at tools and spacesuits designed for future Artemis missions
  • Interactive demonstrations that offered a hands-on sense of what it takes to be part of the mission

Specialty merchandise in high demand

The Space Shop, the visitor complex’s onsite retail store, featured more than 60 different Artemis-themed products for guests, including flight jackets, shirts, mugs, totes and more.

Florida Today highlighted some of the specialty items in a story by space reporter Rick Neale that included insights from Howard Schwartz, interim chief operating officer of the visitor complex:

Excitement for Artemis continues to build, and we’re seeing that reflected in strong demand for related merchandise at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

From limited-edition launch tees to iconic items like the Fisher Space Pen, guests are eager to take home a piece of this historic moment in space exploration.

The guest response to Artemis merchandise was stronger than even the high level that had been anticipated, so the Space Shop temporarily paused online sales for a period after the launch to ensure that all submitted orders were fulfilled.

Artemis launch garners media attention for the visitor complex

The visitor complex was in the spotlight on prominent media outlets, with onsite interviews and broadcasts conducted during the Artemis II launch, including from NASA, shown above in the Gateway attraction.

While the Artemis mission garnered international media attention, the visitor complex was also in the spotlight. Visitor complex spokespersons completed over 20 media interviews between March 30 and the April 1 launch, hosting NBC News (twice), CNN (twice), CBS News, FOX News and Reuters, along with numerous regional media outlets and content creators.
