When fall begins, the season at Kings Canyon National Park’s beloved summer getaway, Cedar Grove Lodge, comes to an end.
Like any well-prepared location within the Delaware North family, Cedar Grove kept plenty of food on hand to cook hearty eats for hungry travelers through its six-month run. But with guests heading home, what’s a lodge to do with its leftover food?
In keeping with Delaware North’s conservation-minded practices, rather than throwing everything away, the property passed along goods to the neighboring Grant Grove Restaurant. The restaurant, which serves Grant Grove visitors and guests of the Delaware North-operated Grant Grove Cabins and John Muir Lodge, was not lacking in supplies. So, staff made the call to donate to people who were – the members of the community who rely on the Squaw Valley food bank to feed themselves and their families.
“It was a nice way for us to be able to contribute to the needs of the local community where so many of our associates live,” says Renee Rux, Delaware North’s operations Manager at Kings Canyon National Park, at which the company operates food, beverage, retail and lodging services.
Items donated included hot dogs and buns, Texas Toast, bread, potatoes and tomatoes. Additional goods such as turkey burgers, watermelon, salsa and several bread selections are next on the list. In total, the donation from Grant Grove is valued at close to $400.
