Delaware North and Boston Properties celebrate the official ‘topping off’ ceremony for The Hub on Causeway project

Major Milestone Met for the 1.5-Million-Square-Foot Transit-Oriented Development Project
on Site of Former Boston Garden

BOSTON, MA (January 30, 2018) – Officials from Delaware North, Boston Properties, the City of Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the community joined more than 50 members of Ironworkers Local 7 to celebrate the official topping-off ceremony for the first phase of “The Hub on Causeway” development today.

The 39-foot steel beam was placed at the entrance to The Hub on Causeway and gathered several hundred signatures from members of the neighborhood, project stakeholders, construction crew workers, and project partners, all of whom signed their names to this history-making endeavor. And, in keeping with tradition, an American flag and small pine tree were attached to the top of beam for good luck. The final beam was hauled 100 feet to the top of the west podium, which will become the top of the ArcLight Boston cinema.

“On behalf of Delaware North, I want to offer a heartfelt thank you to the Boston community for the support for this project and to the incredible men and women of Ironworkers Local 7 for helping us reach this great milestone,” said Charlie Jacobs, CEO of Delaware North’s Boston Holdings. “Thanks to the hard work of so many people, The Hub on Causeway will soon be the new gateway to Boston, forever changing the landscape of this neighborhood for the better.”

The topping-off event marked a major milestone for the project, signifying the symbolic completion of the structural portion of Phase I of “The Hub on Causeway” project. Phase I, dubbed “The Hub”, includes the grand, glass-topped atrium entry of TD Garden, new entrance and underground connector tunnel for North Station and the MBTA Commuter Rail, as well as 175,000 square feet of creative loft office space and several retail and entertainment venues. The grand entry for TD Garden, new entrances for North Station and underground commuter tunnel are set to open in October 2018, just in time for the start of the NBA and NHL seasons.

Openings of the remaining portions of Phase I will occur late in 2019 and include:

  • Star Market, which will become Boston’s largest grocery store.
  • ArcLight Boston, New England’s first entry from ArcLight Cinemas, featuring 15 movie screens
  • A live entertainment venue.
  • 175,000 square feet of office space; 147,500 square feet of which is leased to Rapid7, a leading technology solutions provider.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh, who was unable to attend today’s ceremony added, “The Hub on Causeway will continue our work to bring economic activity and vibrancy to this neighborhood, creating additional housing and needed amenities. I thank all of the workers who have made today's milestone possible, and look forward to this transformative project moving forward."

Since the groundbreaking on January 27, 2016, tradesmen have been working on erecting more than 11,000 tons of steel to construct the frame work of The Hub On Causeway, a joint venture by Delaware North and Boston Properties to develop over 1.5 million square feet of mixed-use retail, office, hotel, residential and an expansion of TD Garden on the 2.5-acre site. This transit-oriented development is a significant investment that will bring substantial improvements to North Station, will create major economic impact for the area and strengthen the viability of this important district in the City of Boston.

Boston Properties manages all development aspects of the project. The project is being constructed by John Moriarty & Associates. The architect for Phase I is Gensler. Delaware North is owner and operator of TD Garden.
