Gourmet Traveller, Australia’s premier food, wine and luxury travel publication, recently named The House at Lizard Island the “Best Luxury Lodge” in its annual Hotel and Travel Awards.

The award winners are selected by Gourmet Traveller editors, with input from luxury travel and culinary experts, as well as journalists from across Australia.

Lizard Island Resort, owned and operated by Delaware North on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, regularly receives travel and lifestyle industry recognition for its blend of barefoot luxury, natural seclusion and high-end amenities.

The House at Lizard Island is an ultra-luxury, three-bedroom residence situated on a private peninsula at the resort.

Excerpts from the Gourmet Traveller article by Editor David Meagher are below.

The House at Lizard Island feels less like a hotel than the ultimate beach house fantasy. Remote, sculptural and surrounded by a cluster of private beaches, the three-bedroom retreat has redefined what an Australian luxury lodge can be: a place where architecture, landscape and service exist in harmony.

The result is a masterclass in tropical modernism. Concrete, copper and glass are softened by New Guinea rosewood and bespoke furnishings, while the structure was designed to “hug the slope of the hill” so it almost disappears into the landscape.

What distinguishes The House is its sense of privacy. In a country blessed with spectacular landscapes, it stands apart as one of Australia’s most remarkable places to stay.

Lizard Island Resort was featured on another roundup of “Best Remote Luxury Stays” by Sitchu, an Australian lifestyle brand, which notes:

Accessible only by private charter flight, Lizard Island Resort is one of Australia’s most remote island luxury escapes. Set within a national park on the northern Great Barrier Reef, the resort is surrounded by coral reefs, white-sand beaches and turquoise waters that feel entirely removed from the mainland.

Elegant suites and villas are designed for barefoot luxury, with the reef just steps away. Guests can snorkel or dive straight from the beach, explore 24 private beaches, or unwind with long lunches and sunset dining overlooking the Coral Sea. It is one of the few places in Australia where the reef feels like part of your everyday surroundings.
