What were the most valuable skills or experiences you gained during your program?
During my internship, I had the opportunity to cross-train as a manager in all lodging and food and beverage departments. This experience gave me a comprehensive understanding of daily operations and the importance of cohesiveness between departments.
What stands out as the most memorable part of your internship?
Helping to execute the Parks and Resorts general manager conference, which took place during my very first week, was an extremely memorable part of my internship. Jumping into such a high-profile event challenged me to quickly adapt, collaborate with different teams and manage multiple responsibilities under pressure.
Were there specific projects or initiatives you worked on that had a lasting impact on your career?
One of the most impactful projects I worked on during my internship was transitioning The Ridgeline Hotel to the Choice Hotels brand and implementing/upholding the new brand standards. This experience provided me with valuable insights into brand integration, operational excellence and attention to detail.
Who or what inspired you most during your internship?
During my internship, I was most inspired by Yellowstone General Manager Cedar Shannon’s growth story with Delaware North. His dedication, resilience and ability to navigate challenges showed me the importance of perseverance and adaptability in the workplace.
Tell us about your career path at Delaware North:
I’ve held several roles within the Parks division, including manager of the Explorer Cabins at Tenaya at Yosemite, as well as operations manager and assistant general manager at The Ridgeline Hotel Estes Park (which transitioned to the Holiday Inn Estes Park in 2024).
Do you stay in touch with colleagues or mentors you met during your internship?
Of course! The relationships I built during this time have been invaluable, as I still work with many of these colleagues today.
How has your perspective on the industry or your career path evolved since your internship?
My internship helped solidify my passion for hospitality, and it has fueled my desire to keep learning, taking on new challenges and advancing in my career. I now see every experience as an opportunity to grow and make a meaningful impact within the company.
What advice would you give someone who was just starting an internship or trainee program with Delaware North?
Be open to learning and embrace every opportunity. Cross-training in different departments helped me understand the bigger picture and develop essential leadership skills.
Ask questions, seek guidance and trust that growth comes with time and experience – it’s okay not to know everything at the start.
