(June 18th, 2014) Just a short boat ride from Gladstone, Heron Island is a nature lover’s paradise, offering a multitude of activities on land and underwater in a stunning marine wonderland.

Heron Island is offering a ‘locals only’ Bed & Breakfast deal starting from $270 per room, per night (or $135 per adult, twin share) in a Turtle Family Room. Stay two nights during the week (Monday to Thursday) or three nights over a weekend (must arrive Fridays) and get 15% off the normal B&B rate, 20% off watersports activities and spa treatments at the Aqua Soul Spa and a complimentary upgrade to the next room type (subject to availability on arrival). What’s more kids 12 years and under stay and eat breakfast for free when using existing bedding.

This great local deal is available now for travel from 30th June until 14th September and conditions apply.

Located at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Heron Island is an 18-hectare coral cay, offering spectacular snorkelling and diving right on the reef. It has sugar-white sands, crystal clear waters and acres of brilliant coral with colourful marine life.

New to the Resort this year is the semi-submersible allowing visitors to experience the reef, without getting wet. The waters around Heron Island are teeming with reef fish, turtles, manta rays and an endless variety of marine invertebrates, such as sea cucumbers and sea urchins. A popular family activity, the semi-submersible allows guests of all ages to get up close and personal with some amazing creatures.

Heron Island has also introduced kayaks this year for guests wanting to head out onto the reef and see the island from a different perspective.

An internationally acclaimed dive destination, Heron Island has at least 20 sites within easy reach of the resort. The diving is of such high standard that Jacques Cousteau listed the Heron Bommie as one of his top 10 favourite dive sites in the world.

If you’re not a diver, then you can snorkel at Heron Island directly off the beach or on one of the three daily snorkel/dive boat tours offering a kaleidoscope of colourful fish and coral on Heron and Wistari Reefs, all within easy reach of Heron Island.

Getting to Heron Island has never been easier. A new seaplane transfer service has recently been introduced providing guests with a bird’s eye view of turtles and whales in the turquoise reef before landing on the waters adjacent to Heron Island – all in just 25 minutes.

Operated by Australia by Seaplane, there are scenic transfers daily (excluding Christmas Day) between 7am and 4.30pm from Gladstone and between 8am and 5.30pm from Heron Island – tide dependent. The price is $291per person, one way and minimum numbers apply.

Guests can also jump on the Heron Islander boat which departs several times a week leaving Gladstone Marina at 11am and arriving Heron Island at 1pm (EST). Prices are $100 per adult and $50 per child return.
