(July 11th, 2014) Heron Island has introduced I-SPY, a new semi-submersible that allows visitors to experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, without getting wet.
The waters around Heron Island – located directly on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef – are teeming with Green and Loggerhead turtles, reef fish, manta rays and an endless variety of marine invertebrates, such as sea cucumbers and sea urchins.
A popular family activity, the semi-submersible will allow guests of all ages to get up close and personal with some amazing underwater creatures. The price is $50 for adults and $35 for children for a one-hour guided tour.

The new I-SPY semi-submersible will give our guests an amazing window into the underwater world, with expert commentary from one of our naturalist guides.”
Those guests who don’t mind getting wet can snorkel at Heron Island directly off the beach or on one of the three daily snorkel boat tours offering a kaleidoscope of colourful fish and coral on Heron and Wistari Reefs.
An internationally acclaimed dive destination, Heron Island has at least 20 sites within easy reach of the resort. The diving is of such high standard that Jacques Cousteau listed the Heron Bommie as one of his top 10 favourite dive sites in the world.
Heron Island is also known for its large population of turtles who come back to breed every year.
From November through to March every year, a breeding population of Green and Loggerhead turtles comes ashore approximately three to seven times during a season. The turtles lay their eggs at the same location where they were born, laying on average 120 eggs in one clutch, and in some instances returning after an absence of 35-40 years since their birth.
Turtles migrate to Heron and Wilson Islands from as far afield as the Solomon Islands, Cape York and Harvey Bay and with careful guidelines for viewing, guests can observe this wonder of nature on a casual walk on the beach or on guided walks.
