From intern to team member: Parks and Resorts’ Erin Benike

Erin Benike joined the company as an environmental and safety intern for Yellowstone General Stores, which is operated by Delaware North at Yellowstone National Park. She currently serves as the general manager for Yellowstone General Stores, overseeing all aspects of operations and maintaining high operational standards while ensuring that guests and team members have an exceptional experience.

What were the most valuable skills or experiences you gained during your program?

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of patience and observation, taking the time to fully understand situations and environments before taking action.

What stands out as the most memorable part of your internship?

The relationships I formed during my internship remain the most memorable aspect. Building connections with both year-round and seasonal team members was incredibly rewarding and helped shape my approach to leadership.

Were there specific projects or initiatives you worked on that had a lasting impact on your career?

While there weren’t specific projects that stood out as career-defining, the experience as a whole instilled in me a strong foundation of values and operational knowledge that has carried through my career.

Who or what inspired you most during your internship?

My inspiration came from the overall drive to contribute to creating meaningful experiences – not just for guests, but for team members as well. This desire to make a difference has fueled my career ever since.

Tell us about your career path since coming back to Delaware North:

I’ve held several different roles within the company, including environmental & safety manager, warehouse supervisor, warehouse manager, food & beverage manager, operations manager, assistant general manager and now, general manager. Each position has contributed to my understanding of different facets of the business.

Do you stay in touch with colleagues or mentors you met during your internship?

Yes, I maintain connections with many colleagues and mentors from my internship. These relationships have been instrumental in my career growth and have provided a sense of continuity throughout my journey.

What accomplishments are you most proud of since completing your internship?

I’m particularly proud of my individual growth, both personally and within the company. However, what brings me the most pride is the team I’ve helped build at Yellowstone. Winning another 15-year contract, strengthening relationships with our clients and creating opportunities to enhance the business have been significant milestones. Above all, I’m proud to feel impactful in my role.

How has your perspective on the industry or your career path evolved since your internship?

I’ve come to appreciate that we’re fundamentally in the people business. Building strong relationships – both internally and externally – is the foundation of our success. This understanding motivates me to continuously explore new approaches and ideas to drive growth and innovation.

Looking back, what advice would you give to yourself at the start of your internship?

It’s okay to feel scared or unsure at the beginning—growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Trust in the process and remain open to learning.

What advice would you give someone who was just starting an internship or trainee program with Delaware North?

While it may sound cliché, the sky truly is the limit. Delaware North offers abundant opportunities for growth, but success depends on your willingness to seize those opportunities.

My advice is to immerse yourself in the business as a whole, not just the department that initially interests you. The broader your understanding, the more valuable you’ll become.
