Delaware North team members ‘Sleep at the G’ to bring awareness to homelessness in Australia

More than 1,000 people entered the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with sleeping bags on May 16 to experience what it is like for thousands of young people in Victoria, Australia, without a place to call home.

“Sleep at the ‘G” is the flagship fundraising event of the Melbourne City Mission, held annually to raise funds and awareness to combat youth homelessness. Delaware North, which has operated hospitality services at the MCG since 2022, sponsored the event. More than 20 team members volunteered to provide warm hospitality and a meal.

Participants learned about the core issues for youth experiencing homelessness and ways to address the pervasive problem.

“As winter sets in each year in Melbourne, the Melbourne City Mission joins hands with the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground for this charity initiative to address youth homelessness,” said Tad Lombardo, customer experience manager for Delaware North at the MCG. “There was an inspiring turnout, and we collectively raised $705,000.”

In addition to hearing stories from individuals who have experienced homelessness, participants connected during the night through entertainment with live music, games, a fashion parade and more.

“Adding warmth to the event, Delaware North, the hospitality provider at the MCG, generously contributed by providing nourishing soup, fresh rolls, coffee and tea to participants,” Lombardo said. “Our team members volunteered their time, investing countless hours leading up to the event to ensure everything was executed seamlessly. Through such collaborative efforts, we take meaningful strides towards a future where every young person in Melbourne has a place to call home.”
