FARMINGTON, N.Y.?–?Jockey Wilfredo Rohena notched his 3000th career win at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack (FLGR) on Wednesday, August 28. He reached the milestone when Smooth Cat scored a two and one-quarter length victory in the fourth race.
Rohena began his riding career in Puerto Rico in 1985. His first winning mount was aboard Rassllas.
The Carolina, Puerto Rico native was consistently one of the top riders at El Comandante He was the leading jockey in Puerto Rico in 1994. His success earned him the nickname of "the master" by his fellow jockeys
The 54-year-old veteran journeyman was an immediate factor after arriving at FLGR. He finished second in the local standings in 2011 before claiming the FLGR title in 2012.
Rohena earned his milestone victory aboard a horse from the barn of his primary trainer Dan Conway. He has visited the FLGR winners circle with 64 horses conditioned by Conway.
"He’s a class act and a wonderful human being," said Conway. "There is no smarter rider than Rohena."
Rohena registered a total of 767 triumphs at FLGR. He is currently ninth in the 2019 local standings with 22 victories.
