Fifty national food companies joining North American managers and chefs
BUFFALO, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2009) – Delaware North Companies, a global leader in hospitality and food service that was founded and headquartered in Buffalo, is holding its annual corporate food and beverage summit here for the first time, from Nov. 16 to 18.

Delaware North will welcome to Buffalo representatives of 50 national food and beverage companies, including Tyson Foods, Cargill, Heinz, Pro-Act, Sara Lee, Hormel, and PepsiCo, which Delaware North named earlier this year as its official provider of fountain drinks and packaged food and beverage products for its U.S. operations. Several suppliers with Buffalo ties are scheduled to attend, including Rich Products, Sorrento and Tarantino Foods.

The summit at the Avant building in downtown Buffalo will include a trade show on the afternoon of Nov. 17, during which the food companies will display their latest products. On hand will be Delaware North food and beverage managers and chefs from many of its operations across the United States and Canada, as well as corporate executives from its supply management services group and other departments here in Buffalo.

In all, the summit is expected to draw nearly 200 people from outside of Buffalo for the three days. A number of the vendors attending the summit visit Delaware North in Buffalo several times a year.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown is expected to welcome attendees to Buffalo at 8 a.m. Nov. 17 at the summit.

“It is exciting for the city of Buffalo to host such an important event for Delaware North, one of our greatest corporate success stories,” Brown said.

Jacobs initiated Delaware North’s first annual companywide culinary gathering in 2002 and has continued to drive its expansion into a full-fledged trade show and conference. In 2003 Jacobs also created the Delaware North Culinary & Hospitality Council, which organizes the summit and whose mission is to consolidate and advance the company’s culinary and hospitality objectives across all of its divisions.

The first several Delaware North food and beverage summits were focused on chef development and were held at culinary schools such as the Culinary Institute of America-Greystone in St. Helena, Calif. Since then the company has held separate chef development meetings and instituted other culinary training opportunities while requiring all chefs to obtain certification from the American Culinary Federation.

In recent years, most of the company’s broader food and beverage summits have been held in Chicago because of its central location for Delaware North’s nearly 100 operating locations across the United States and Canada.

The theme of this year’s summit is “The Upside of Upscale,” with a focus on sharing best practices in operating the many restaurants, buffets, clubs and suites for which Delaware North is responsible. In addition to the trade show, Delaware North attendees will hear presentations on emerging trends in the food service and hospitality industry, such as pairing food and beer selections, menu development, produce sourcing and sustainable seafood initiatives.
