Delaware North-operated destination sets new standards for environmental responsibility
Daytona Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room is the first gaming facility in the United States to achieve Leadership in Engineering and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The destination is also the first LEED-certified project in the city of Daytona Beach, Fla., and the first gold-certified project in Volusia County.
Delaware North Companies owns and operates Daytona Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room and guided the construction of the new $30 million gaming facility last June. The property’s new gold-level certification is a tribute to GreenPath®, Delaware North’s environmental management system,. Delaware North has a strong record of obtaining third-party certification for facilities and can point to a number of major construction and development projects built to LEED standards.
“The Daytona Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room is setting new standards in regard to environmental construction and responsibility,” said Delaware North’s Vice President of Facilities Jim Houser. “We’re extremely proud of this achievement and believe it proves our environmental capabilities.”
The Daytona Beach Kennel Club facility encompasses 53,000 square feet and has the following environmental features:
  • The use of a variety of water efficiency tools, including high-efficiency toilets and indigenous landscaping that reduce the amount of water needed to maintain plant life. The building is 40- percent more water efficient than its predecessor and saves nearly 350,000 gallons of water annually.
  • Roof-top solar panels that heat water, making the building 25-percent more energy efficient and save an estimated $40,000 in energy costs annually.
  • Biodegradable soap and solar-panel-heated water in all restrooms and hand-washing areas.
  • Air filtration systems that provide above-grade air quality.
  • Preferred parking for hybrid cars and guests who carpool.
In total, Daytona Beach Kennel Club is now 40-percent more water efficient and 25-percent more energy efficient than its previous building. The new facility, which opened to the public in May 2008, features a 450-person poker room and full-service restaurant.
Delaware North is now focusing its attentions on LEED certification for upcoming projects at Tenaya Lodge in Calif. and various other properties around the country.
The LEED green building rating system is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance sustainable buildings. LEED provides four levels of certification for building in the United States: certified, silver, gold and platinum, which is the highest rating. The certification is based on assessing five key areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
