Position: Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer

Thomas Popek serves as vice president, deputy general counsel and chief compliance officer at Delaware North, a global leader in hospitality and food service.
 
In his role, Popek assists the company’s general counsel in managing the legal department and provides counsel to senior management in all matters relevant to Delaware North’s businesses. Specifically, he manages all corporate and transactional assistant general counsels and staff attorneys as well as all paralegals and other legal department administration and staff.
 
Popek, who joined Delaware North in 2015, provides counsel on all corporate and commercial legal matters pertaining to the company’s businesses, including acquisitions, strategic alliances, large-scale contracts and other commercial transactions and relationships. Among many other responsibilities, he provides input into the management and resolution of legal issues related to transactional, commercial, corporate and regulatory matters in a manner consistent with the company’s business decisions and growth strategy.
 
Prior to joining Delaware North, Popek was an equity partner at Phillips Lytle LLP in Buffalo, N.Y., where he founded and led the firm’s Canadian Cross-Border Team and established its first international office in Ontario, Canada. In that role, he oversaw a team of multidisciplinary attorneys and coordinated numerous transactional and litigation matters with foreign counsel.
 
Previously, Popek was a senior associate at Hodgson Russ LLP – practicing in the areas of business, technology, and intellectual property. Additionally, he served as the lead counsel on multiple large-scale international business process and information technology outsourcing arrangements.
 
In the eight years preceding his entrance into the legal arena, Popek served as an engineer at organizations such as Applied Sciences Group Inc., MicroData Technologies Inc., and iSystems International Inc., and he also served as an adjunct professor at Hilbert College, near Buffalo.   
 
Popek, who earned a juris doctorate at the University at Buffalo, also holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the institution. He was named a Super Lawyers® Rising Star and featured in Buffalo Business First’s 40 Under 40 list for 2013.
