Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts celebrates first season as operators with gubernatorial proclamation.
BEDFORD, Va. (September 27, 2013) – Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts, a global leader in hospitality, is celebrating its first season operating Peaks of Otter, the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway lodge and restaurant, for the National Park Service. As part of this celebration, Peaks of Otter Lodge and Delaware North have received formal recognition from the Commonwealth of Virginia by Governor Bob McDonnell for their contributions to the state. The proclamation was shared with guests at the grand opening ceremony Friday, September 27.

“We are honored to receive the recognition from the governor’s office, and excited to work with local, regional, and state government officials in providing jobs and a unique vacation experience in the state of Virginia,” said Tim Smith, regional vice president for Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts.

Delaware North was awarded a 10 year contract for management of Peaks of Otter Lodge and Restaurant, as well as its retail stores and shuttle service earlier this year.  Peaks of Otter Lodge employs 72 Virginians and attracts thousands of tourists each year.

“I am pleased that one of my favorite stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Peaks of Otter Lodge and Restaurant, is back in operation once again.” said Rep. Bob Goodlatte. “It is my hope that this cherished landmark will continue to welcome visitors from across the nation and the globe to our region for many years to come.”

“I commend Delaware North Companies on its investment in Virginia. Your contribution to the community and to local and regional business and government leadership is strong,” said U.S. Senator Mark Warner. “Peaks of Otter is a unique jewel of the Blue Ridge.”

Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts has made significant improvements in its first season as operator. These additions include equipping each of the 63 guest rooms with a 37-inch flat-screen television, adding direct TV, installing the infrastructure to allow for Wi-Fi throughout the lodge, and repainting portions of the property.

“The City of Roanoke and surrounding communities have embraced the mountain, lake and lodge as a wonderful getaway.” said Robert Peters, general manager at Peaks of Otter Lodge. “We are proud to operate Peaks of Otter and offer a number of improvements, while staying true to the charm and character of the region.”

A new Grab n Go Coffee Shop concept will open mid-October. Guests will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of homemade pastries, cakes, cookies, ice cream, fresh sandwiches, and ready-made items. Beverages will include cappuccinos, fresh coffee, and soft drinks. Additionally, Peaks of Otter has brought back popular Friday night Prime Rib & Seafood and Thanksgiving buffets.

Delaware North Parks & Resorts has over 20 years experience in variety of venues, including Yosemite National Park, Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex and Yellowstone National Park. This is Delaware North’s first season operating Shenandoah National Park, which is located 2.5 hours north of Bedford, Va.
