BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 21, 2008) - Telstra Dome has become the first AFL venue to open a food outlet dedicated to providing healthier foods.

The outlet, located near Gate 6 on Level 1, will offer a variety of meals which have earned the Heart Foundation Tick, including two salads and three sandwiches provided by the Dome's catering partner, Delaware North.

Fresh fruit and yoghurt as well as Tick approved meat pies will also be offered.

The Chief Executive of Telstra Dome, Ian Collins AM said that Telstra Dome had always been an innovative venue and was continuing that tradition with the opening of the healthier food outlet.

"There is a growing demand for healthier food options to be offered at the footy and other events staged at Telstra Dome. We believe that this trend will continue to grow, so it's time to start introducing healthier options," he said.

With an average of 2.5 million patrons attending Telstra Dome events each year, the Heart Foundation said this was an important step to give sports fans access to genuinely healthier choices.

"Tick approved salads and sandwiches are tested to ensure they provide a serve of vegetables or the fibre equivalent, as well as meeting our strict standards for serve size, saturated and trans fats and salt," said Heart Foundation CEO, Kathy Bell.

"Random audits ensure the strict standards are maintained," she added.

"And for those who like to enjoy a pie at the footy, the Tick approved meat pie offered has half the saturated fat and salt and almost a third of the kilojoules compared to regular pies," she said.

In addition, Delaware North also has revitalised its corporate menus in Telstra Dome's Medallion Club further demonstrating its commitment to healthier alternatives through the 'Culinary Wellbeing' program.

Mr Collins added he knew from personal experience the importance of adopting a balanced and moderate approach to nutrition.

"It is well known that I confronted some health issues in recent years and I have invited along a few champion footballers from my era who also recognise the value in what is happening at Telstra Dome," said Mr Collins (who was a Premiership player with Carlton during his 161 game career).

Today's launch will be attended by triple Brownlow Medallist, Bob Skilton, Footscray Brownlow Medallist, John Schultz, and two time Premiership Carlton player, Sergio Silvagni, who have all expressed their support for Telstra Dome's healthier food outlet.

The outlet will now be open at all AFL, A-League and NRL fixtures plus other major events staged at Telstra Dome. Apart from this dedicated outlet, healthier Tick approved options will also be available at other retail outlets around the ground.

Delaware North was the first caterer to offer Tick approved meals at Australian sports venues at this year's Australian Tennis Open at Melbourne Park. The popularity of these meals demonstrated that sports fans welcome tasty offerings that also meet the Heart Foundation's nutrition requirements.
