SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif., April 5, 2012 - Sequoia National Park and the National Park Service are proud to once again partner with the National Park Foundation to present National Park Week April 21-29. Visitors to the park will enjoy free admission all week long. In conjunction, Wuksachi Lodge, nestled in the heart of the park, will kick things off Saturday, April 21 with its annual Earth Day celebration. The Wuksachi Lodge Earth Day Fair will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lodgepole Complex, located just a few miles from the lodge. Guests of all ages can anticipate educational displays, interpretive information, organic and natural snacks, recycled souvenirs and plenty of giveaways. Local guides and naturalists will also be on hand to take visitors on explorations of the impressive animal and plant world living within the park.
From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. the same evening, April’s Lyrid meteors will illuminate the moonless night with up to 20 dazzling streaks of ‘shooting stars’. Interested stargazers should wear good walking shoes, bundle up for cold weather and plan to depart the Wuksachi Lodge lobby at 8:30 p.m. for a short guided walk to the viewing location.
On April 22, an intimate guided tour of Giant Forest will begin at 9:30 a.m. Participants on this hike should wear a good pair of walking shoes, bring water and snacks, and expect to walk up to three miles. The 1.5 hour tour will depart from Round Meadow located in Giant Forest near the ‘Ed by Ned’ tree.
Also taking place during National Park Week on April 27 is Arbor Day. Originating in 1872, Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Why not mark the occasion with a baby sequoia tree? In an effort to perpetuate the disappearing species, Wuksachi Lodge sells packaged saplings in its gift shop for visitors to take home and plant in their own yard.
